MISES, LUDWIG EDLER VON
MISES, LUDWIG EDLER VON (1881–1973), economist, best known for his work on monetary theory and his criticism of interventionism and central planning. Born in Lemberg, the son of an Austrian railway engineer, von Mises was educated in Vienna. As professor of economics at the University of Vienna from 1913 to 1938, he represented the Austrian economic school of thought. He served as a consultant to the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and formed the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research in 1926. From 1934 Von Mises taught in Geneva and from 1940 in New York. Together with Luigi Einaudi, Jacques Rueff, and Wilhelm Roepke, he founded the Mont Pélérin Society, an influential international association of free-market economists and sociologists. His writings include: The Theory of Money and Credit (1912); Kritik des Interventionismus (1929); Die Ursachen der Wirtschaftskrise (1931); The Ultimate Foundation of Economic Science (1962); Human Action: a Treatise on Economics (19663). -BIBLIOGRAPHY: H.
